What are bio-identical hormones?

Hormones affect many bodily functions within men and women’s bodies. They influence our growth, appetite, mood, stress, immune function and libido.

As we age and our bodies change, our hormones decline or become unbalanced, and this has an impact on our behaviour and general well-being.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) re-balances the hormone levels which eases symptoms.

Bio-identical hormones are man-made hormones taken from plant estrogens which are identical in structure to those found in the human body. They are commonly used to replicate estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEA hormones and have been used to treat many patients from Walton-On-Thames, Hersham, Hampton, Esher and throughout Surrey.

What conditions does Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy treat?

BHRT can help ease symptoms that are associated with:
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Andropause (male menopause)
  • Adrenal and thyroid disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Premenstrual Syndrome
  • Endometriosis
  • Depression
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Postnatal depression
  • Other hormone related conditions

We now look at some of the more common reason for treating patients throughout Surrey with BHRT and the benefits of BHRT.

Using BHRT to treat the male and female menopause

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is commonly used to replace the reducing levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones during the female menopause and perimenopause(the time leading up to the menopause).

By replacing these hormones, BHRT can help ease symptoms that many women experience when going through the menopause or perimenopause including:

  • Mood changes
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flushes
  • Memory loss
  • Weight gain
  • Sleep problems
  • Changes to libido
  • Low energy

At The Levitas Clinic in Esher, we have helped hundreds of women from Hampton, Walton-On-Thames, Esher, Hersham and throughout Surrey increase their well-being through the use of BHRT.

Many people don’t realise that men also experience a change in hormones with the gradual reduction in testosterone. Testosterone decreases by about 1% per year after men have reached 30 and this process is known as andropauseor the male menopause. Men may experience:

  • Depressed mood
  • Fatigue
  • Low libido
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Decreased frequency of erections

Using BHRT to deal with stress hormones

The adrenal glands are found near the kidneys and produce different hormones including adrenalin, noradrenalin, cortisol and DHEA. These hormones help to provide energy and help the body deal with stress.

Modern ways of living have seen people increasingly deal with extended periods of stress. This, together with other factors such as diet deficiencies, lack of sleep and digestive infections, causes the adrenal glands to go into overdrive and pump out stress hormones.

This eventually leads to the adrenal glands becoming fatigued and producing abnormally low levels of cortisol and DHEA hormones which result in you becoming anxious and exhausted.

Low levels of cortisol hormones may result in these symptoms:
  • Digestive problems
  • Poor immune system leading to infections and inflammatory symptoms
  • Mental and physical fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleep problems
  • Low blood pressure
  • Headaches
  • Symptoms relating to blood sugar imbalances such as feeling light-headed, reliant on snacks or drugs such as caffeine and alcohol to boost mood and energy
BHRT can help ease symptoms that are associated with:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of libido
  • Dry eyes
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Loss of hair on head

By replacing low levels of cortisol and DHEA hormones using bio-identical hormone replacement therapy at The Levitas Clinic in Surrey, we can help reduce these symptoms and enhance your well-being.
