What is Iron Deficiency?

If you have low levels of haemoglobin in your red blood cells, you could be deficient in iron or suffering from anemia.

Anemia is a condition where you don’t have enough healthy blood cells to carry oxygen around the body and this may leave you feeling tired, weak and lacking in energy.

Iron deficiency can be due to several reasons including:

  • Digestive problems which affect the absorption of iron
  • Heavy periods in women
  • Pregnancy
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestine because of e.g.stomach ulcers, piles or inflammation of the bowel

Why have an iron infusion?

Iron supplements can restore your red blood cells. An iron infusion which is delivered intravenously is effective as it bypasses your digestive system and reaches your blood stream quicker.

An iron infusion is also useful if:

  • You can’t take iron tablets by mouth
  • You can’t absorb iron through your stomach
  • You can’t absorb iron quickly enough due to blood loss
  • You need to increase your iron levels quickly to avoid medical complications

At The Levitas Clinic in Esher, we have treated hundreds of patients from Hampton, Hersham, Walton-on-Thames, Esher and throughout Surrey for iron infusions. Our expert team ensure that the process is safe, painless and delivers optimum results.

What is the process for an iron infusion?

To begin with, you will meet with clinician for an initial consultation at The Levitas Clinic in Esher. We will review your medical history and any medication that you are taking. We may take a blood test at this stage. The consultation should take about 30 minutes.

At your next appointment, we will make sure that you are comfortable, and then, using a fine needle, we will insert a small tube into your vein. This catheter is attached via a long tube to an IV bag of iron which has been diluted with a saline solution.

The iron infusion can take up to 3 or 4 hours and you will be seated throughout the process.

Depending upon your iron levels, you may need a course of treatments, and this will be discussed during your consultation and treatment. Your iron levels will be closely monitored after your treatment to ensure that they stay at the right levels for you.
